The W. C. Heiam Foundation held its 13th annual fundraiser, "Caribbean Nights" Summer Benefit on Aug. 9 at The Harvest Moon Cooking Company. This year's event topped all others in the past, raising over $66,000 for the foundation, which supports the Cook Hospital.
It was a warm summer evening for the benefit and 182 supporters attended. As the guests arrived, they had the opportunity to have their photo taken as a memento of the evening. The program began with cocktails, appetizers and music by the "Bahama Pa Pa's" beginning at 5:30 p.m. A silent auction showcasing donations from area businesses and individuals was held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. There were over 125 gifts to bid on in the silent auction, which is always enjoyed by the guests. A delicious buffet dinner including Caribbean selections was served at 7 p.m.
At 8:30 p.m. the winning names were drawn for the raffle. Lucky winner were: first prize, BSA Royal double-barrel shotgun (valued at $1,595), Marge Herr; second prise, commercial electric pressure washer (valued at $399), Debbie Babiracki; third place, spa day at DreamWeaver Salon & Day Spa (valued at $300), Ed Ferguson.
Following the raffle drawing, the live auction began. This year's live auction included many great gifts. There was lots of enthusiasm in the crowd as participants vied to become the successful bidder on the 11 donated items ranging from wood carvings to an airplane tour to vacations. The live auction alone raised over $11,000.
In addition to the money collected from the live and silent auctions, the annual benefits raises money through ticket sales ($100 per person to attend), additional donations in response to the invitation, cash contributions from businesses, raffle ticket sales and the pre-benefit "Chick Flick" party. The success of this event is made possible by every donation, large and small.
Proceeds from the pre-benefit Chick Flick party and "Caribbean Nights" benefit will go towards the foundation's goal this year of reaching the first $1 million of its long-term goal of a $2 million endowment to support the Cook Hospital in the years to come. With the continued support of the community members, the W. C. Heiam Medical Foundation board is confident they will reach their goal.
