The W. C. Heiam Medical Foundation’s 14th annual benefit, “A Groovy Gala” was held Friday, August 24 at The Harvest Moon Cooking Company. It was a warm summer evening and 157 guests were in attendance. The evening was filled with fabulous food and libations, groovy entertainment and lots of laughter and enjoyment. Many of the guests dressed for the occasion in the fashions of the '60s and '70s.
Once again, the annual benefit was very successful, raising $56,642.05 for the foundation. Proceeds came from cash and ticket donations, tips, live and silent auctions, raffle sales and the foundation’s pre-benefit “Chick Flick” party.
This year’s live auction items, valued at $10,389, included: one gallon bottle of 1967 Canadian Club whiskey; outdoor fire bowl; Terry Redlin print; original chain saw carving; Cirrus SR22 flight and tour; Voyagaire Houseboat trip; Hilton Head vacation; and Thunderhook fly-in fishing trip. Raffle drawing prizes were a Charles Daly 20-ga. shotgun, valued at $1,189 and a $300 spa day at DreamWeaver Salon & Day Spa. The silent auction included many fun and useful items for bidding, all donated by area businesses and individuals. The total value of the silent auction items was $11,634.
The W. C. Heiam Medical Foundation’s long-term goal is to create a $2 million endowment fund to insure that quality health care remains available for all who live, work or visit in the Cook-Orr Healthcare District. The foundation’s assets as of September 7, 2007 were $1,142,013.99.
