News: Hospital to purchase new lift system

Earlier this year, the Cook Hospital requested money from the Heiam Foundation for a “bi-level positive airway pressure” breathing apparatus for treatment and care of individuals with respiratory and pulmonary conditions. After more evaluation and training, it was determined by the doctors and staff that this equipment was too specialized to have an application at the Cook Hospital.

After further consideration, the Cook Hospital sought permission from the Foundation to use the money to purchase a bariatric lift system to be installed in one of the hospital rooms. These are permanent lift systems mounted in ceilings over hospital beds. New regulations require that these systems be able to lift a maximum of 500 pounds, up from the previous requirement of 350 pounds. The hospital hopes to get a matching grant to enable them to purchase two of these lift systems.

The Heiam board members agreed with the need for the lift and approved the hospital’s request.

Even though the Cook Hospital is a thriving example of what is possible when a community bands together, the facility still struggles to make ends meet. A district-owned and legislatively formed body, the hospital can levy taxes for capital improvements, but has no means to fund the continual investments that must be made in high-tech equipment and outreach programs.

The role of the W.C. Heiam Medical Foundation is to help the Cook Hospital fulfill its vision to continue increasing the quality and scope of services available. Currently, the foundation's financial worth is approximately $1.1 million, which is invested conservatively by a professional financial advisor. In order to make a greater and truly sustaining annual contribution, the foundation must increase its base to $2 million. On such equity, sizable interest dollars could be generated each year, allowing the foundation to increase in contributions.
